Resenting the Hero by Moira J Moore
In a realm beset by natural disasters, only the bonded Pairs--Source and Shield--make the land habitable and keep the citizenry safe. But can Dunleavy Mallorough and Lord Shintaro Karish put aside their differences to defeat something even more unnatural than their reluctant affections for each other? (via amazon.com)

I love this book. I really do. The reviews are mixed online, this is one of those books where you either love the character, or greatly dislike her. How you can dislike someone who thinks 'ignorant mushroom' is an insult, I don't know...

This book is the first in the series - the fifth book came out this August. I go into a very in-depth, embarassingly gushy review in my blog (click the image).

In general, I adore this book and would recommend it to anyone who's after something different in fantasy. It is a very... stoic... take on the whole fantasy 'soulmates' trope. The hero and heroine are forced to work together because they share a magical link. You'd think you would know how this ends... but the journey to the 'happily ever after' is one that you won't expect.

I think I read this one before... it sounds familiar. I can't remember if I read all of it though. I'll pick it up next time I'm at the library.

Do! It's an amazing book of awesome that more people should discover. I find the narrative 'voice' in fantasy very same-y. This one really sticks out, in a good way.

I love these books. I love Lee for all her flaws. I like feeling smarter than the main character, sometimes.

That said, the latest book irritated me. I'm ready for a few steps forward in the relationship. It seems like all we had in book 5 were setbacks.

Ditto everything you said... except for the stuff about the last book, because I haven't read it yet.

I've spoiled myself for book five... I don't know what to think.

Yay at finding another Moira J Moore fan! :D

I picked up the first one on a whim, because the title and cover art amused me. I've been picking up the sequels whenever I happen to notice there's another one out, which usually happens to be within a couple of weeks of the release date, somehow. I'm going to keep picking them up, but the last book was SUCH a downer.

I've been planning to buy it when it's available for shipping to Australia. I have the other four - and I want to complete the collection!

But oh... I'm hoping I'll find some redemptive point in the book. Crossing fingers.

Well, it doesn't conclude the series. So things can still look up in the next book. I really hope they do.
